This class will teach your child about the core principles of computer science – without them ever laying a finger on a computer! The name of the game is computational thinking, the ability to understand and apply the big ideas behind how computers think and work. It is this understanding that will set the stage for future success in school, in STEM-related fields, and even in seemingly unrelated careers. While various computer programs, languages, features, and technologies come and go, the fundamentals stay the same, and these fundamentals are the foundation of this course. Each of the eight sessions will focus on a different concept, with topics including the binary number system, sorting and searching algorithms, and minimal spanning trees. Don’t worry if you don’t know what any of those terms mean right now. By the time this course is over, your child will know the meaning and importance of all of them and more!
At least 80% of each session will be spent with the students engaged in hands-on, cooperative learning activities designed to reinforce the various concepts being introduced. In-depth group discussions will further allow all students to shape their understanding of these building blocks of computing. The problem-solving and critical thinking skills employed while completing the activities will transfer to other areas of your child’s life and education, including math, science, reading/language arts, and more.
