CODING & COMPUTER SCIENCE

Learn computer science – without the computers!

This class will teach your child about the core principles of computer science – without them ever laying a finger on a computer! The name of the game is computational thinking, the ability to understand and apply the big ideas behind how computers think and work. It is this understanding that will set the stage for future success in school, in STEM-related fields, and even in seemingly unrelated careers. While various computer programs, languages, features, and technologies come and go, the fundamentals stay the same, and these fundamentals are the foundation of this course. Each of the eight sessions will focus on a different concept, with topics including the binary number system, sorting and searching algorithms, and minimal spanning trees. Don’t worry if you don’t know what any of those terms mean right now. By the time this course is over, your child will know the meaning and importance of all of them and more!

Class Features:

  • Recommended for Grades 2-8 (Ages 7-13)
  • Classes meet for 75 minutes once a week for 8 weeks
  • No computers needed

Code new projects each week!

In our Create with Code classes, your son or daughter will learn basic coding concepts by creating new projects each week. Activities are available in many different themes and everyone will be able to work on projects suited to their own interests. Video games. Sports. Music. Art. Fashion. And that’s just SCRATCHing the surface! The self-guided curriculum for this class was developed by Google for their CS First program. Students will use Scratch, developed by the MIT Media Lab, to create and run their games.

Class Features:

  • Recommended for Grades 3-10 (Ages 8-15)
  • Classes meet for 75 minutes once a week for 8 weeks
  • Self-guided curriculum allows all students to work at their own pace

Coding’s not just for big kids!

Our Create with Code Jr. class will introduce your 5-7 year old to coding with fun, interactive projects using the Scratch Jr. visual programming language. Each week, we will be coding a new project based on some favorite playground games, such as tag, monkey in the middle, and even miniature golf. They’ll learn how to record their voices and add sound to their projects, use message blocks to make characters communicate, learn how to change their project’s background, and much more. The problem solving and critical thinking skills built in this class will set the stage for success in school and give your child new found confidence in their mental abilities.

Class Features:

  • Recommended for Grades K-2 (Ages 5-7)
  • Classes meet for 45 minutes once a week for 8 weeks
  • Projects will be completed using the Scratch Jr. app available for Apple and Android tablets
